What is a Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL)?

QWEL is a certification program for landscape professionals to learn how to reduce landscape water demand by becoming more water efficient in landscape design, maintenance and operation.

QWEL is the second approved US EPA WaterSense Irrigation Auditor certification program in the nation and was developed in cooperation with the California Landscape Contractors Association, Sonoma County Water Agency, City of Santa Rosa, Marin Municipal Water District and the colleges of Santa Rosa and Marin.qwel-logo-transparent

QWEL has received the US EPA WaterSense Certification Program for Irrigation Professionals label. The Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership was awarded the 2013 EPA WaterSense Excellence Award winner for Promoting WaterSense and Water-efficient Irrigation Practices, specifically for the QWEL program.

This nationally recognized certification program is offered or is under consideration for expansion in California, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, South Carolina and Washington.

In 2014, FL-WET Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, obtained authorization as a Professional Certifying Organization (PCO) of QWEL and US EPA WaterSense to provide the instruction and manage the certification program within Florida.

In order to become a Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper, participants will need to complete a 120-question exam with a passing score of 75% or better. Annual Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) will be required in order to keep the QWEL certification current.

Additional curriculum available includes a Greywater training module. Plans are underway for future educational sessions to cover Rainwater Harvesting and Advanced Water Management.
